Coca Cola unveils its tear-jerking new Christmas advert

Tissues at the ready! Coca Cola unveils its tear-jerking new Christmas advert which tells the story of a father’s epic journey to deliver his daughter’s letter to Santa

  • This year’s is a little different to Coca Cola’s usual ‘Holidays are coming’ advert
  • Features a father desperate trying to deliver his daughter’s letter to Santa
  • Dad, who works on oil rig, battles through forests, oceans and frozen landscapes

Coca Cola has unveiled it’s new Christmas advert – and it’s a real tear-jerker.

A far cry from its usual ‘Holidays are Coming’ jolly festive ad, the story kicks off with a father leaving his family to go and work on an oil rig.

As he drives away his daughter catches up with him to give him a letter addressed to Santa.

The father pops the letter in his lunchbox – and seemingly forgets about it until he tucks in and spots it after sipping from a bottle of Coke.

A far cry from its usual jolly ‘Holidays are Coming’ festive ad, the story kicks off with a father leaving his family to go and work on an oil rig. As he drives away his daughter catches up with him to give him a letter addressed to Santa

Panicked as he spies the ‘post’ boat pulling away from the rig, the devoted dad jumps into a rib and chases after it – until the engine fails.

While he’s floating around on the water, an enormous blue whale jumps from the depths of the ocean and sends him flying from the boat.

We then see the bedraggled father washed up on a shoreline, still clutching the letter – and, undeterred, he continues his quest, battling through forests, lakes and scaling cliffs until he reaches the snowy landscape of the North Pole.

Finally spotting a wooden chalet adorned in fairy lights and illuminated by the Northern Lights in the distance, the father makes his approach – only to find a sign on the door reading: ‘Closed for Christmas.’

Crestfallen, he sinks to his knees – and that’s when the Coca Cola truck comes to the rescue.

The unseen driver offers the dad a lift back home, and hands him his daughter’s letter as he hops out of the cabin.

It’s at that point he opens it – and reads the only thing his daughter wanted for Christmas was to have her Daddy home. Cue floods of tears.

As he looks up his daughter runs towards him and the reunited pair embrace – while a message appears on the screen reading: ‘This Christmas, give something only you can give.’

It then cuts to the driver of the truck – none other than Santa himself – who gives a cheeky wink.

The touching advert was made by Oscar nominated director Taika Waititi, who is behind big budget flicks including Jojo Rabbit and the new Star Wars movie.

It won’t appear on TV until December, and will run alongside the brand’s traditional Holidays are Coming commercial.

Kris Robbens, marketing director at Coca-Cola Great Britain, said: ‘As a company, Coca-Cola has been celebrating the festive season through our advertising since the 1920s, featuring uplifting messages of unity and joy.

‘Our new advert reflects the real magic of Christmas – our greater appreciation for loved ones, a sense of community and our need to be present with each other this Christmas, above all else.’

There’s been a number of Christmas adverts with a particularly poignant message this year, in light of the coronavirus pandemic which has brought suffering to many.
