A MAN has started a furious debate over how much should be spent on an engagement ring, after he was criticised for budgeting more for a TV than a ring for his fiancée.
The UK-based man took to Reddit to say he had chosen a gold and emerald engagement ring that was in the sale for £180 down from £300.
He said his sister has slammed his decision after he was willing to splash out £250 on a new TV – but wouldn’t raise the amount he’d spend on his future wife.
He wrote on the post: “I picked out a ring I think she’ll like. She never wears rings and isn’t a massive fan of diamonds.
“The ring is cheap. It was £300 and has actually gone down to £180. I mentioned this to my sister who said I was a d*** essentially.
“Apparently, she'll be showing it to her friends (some of whom are engaged), who will know about rings and clarity and such.
“She says they will see that it's cheap and it will be embarrassing for her. I'm 90 per cent sure my girlfriend doesn't know much about jewellery and clarity.”
He said that he recently got a new job and was going to buy a TV for £250.
He added: “I kind of realised I’m willing to spend more on myself for a random treat yourself present than an engagement ring and I started to understand my sister’s perspective a bit more.”
The man asked for the opinion of Reddit users and was met with a split response.
Most people defended his small ring budget and said to ignore his sister as the cost doesn’t really matter.
One said: “NTA, it's not the money that you should be worried about when proposing. I promise you she will be much happier with something that suits her style that she knows you put thought into choosing.
“Plus, it means you'll have more to spend on the wedding/ honeymoon/ literally anything else.”
Another reasoned: “There's nothing wrong with buying a good gift that happens to be cheap. However, you said you'd buy a TV that costs way more than the ring.
“My suggestion is just hold off on buying the TV or you could give off the wrong idea in the long run.”
The ring is cheap. It was £300 and has actually gone down to £180. I mentioned this to my sister who said I was a d*** essentially.
And one added: “The key here though is that he didn’t go out looking for a cheap ring specifically, he found a ring he thinks she will love and is only conflicted because it’s cheap.”
However, some slammed his decision and said a TV should be a lower priority than an engagement ring.
One commented: “If my fiance got a cheap ring I would be proud, unless I learned that he spent nearly 50% more on a present for himself. Then I would be concerned.”
Another person agreed: “Plenty of women want nice engagement rings. That doesn’t mean she is a bad person.”
