Prince William Honors His Late Mother, Princess Diana, with the New Future Forward Five-Year Plan

Prince William is following in his late mother Princess Diana’s footsteps with the launch of a new five-year plan that encourages today’s youth to make a difference.

Per People, the prince released a statement to introduce the new Future Forward five-year strategy for The Diana Award charity, founded in 1999. The plan, launched today in tandem with International Day of Youth (August 12), empowers young people to think forward and serve as changemakers, per the duke. “Organisations like The Diana Award have never been more important in nurturing the talent of young people and working with them to change the world for the better,” William wrote in the foreword. “Future Forward sets out The Diana Award’s blueprint for how change can be achieved, with young people at its heart.”

According to the organization’s press release, Future Forward specifically strives to combat systemic inequalities and promote social mobility among youths by highlighting their potential and encouraging them to make a difference in their communities. This is especially crucial in light of the ongoing pandemic, the release noted. “The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health and social inequality has been felt most acutely by young people,” per the release. “Young people are driving positive change but their voices are still missing from the conversations about the post-pandemic recovery. On International Day of Youth, The Diana Award’s Future Forward strategy puts young people at the heart of leading change.”

This initiative comes after the long-awaited statue unveiling of Princess Diana at the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace on July 1, what would have been her 60th birthday. Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, attended the unveiling despite the ongoing tension among the family, reuniting with Prince William as the two paid their respects. “I’m truly honored to be celebrating your work, your commitment to change making and the vital role that you’ve taken on representing a new generation of humanitarianism,” Harry said in a video address ahead of the event, adding that his mother “would be so proud of you all for living authentic life with purpose and with compassion for others.”

He continued, “Our mum believed that young people have the power to change the world. She believed in your strength because she saw it day in and day out and in the faces of young people exactly like you, she witnessed a boundless enthusiasm and passion.”
