Gardeners World: Monty Don’s advice on topiary
Monty Don, 70, was left emotional after sisters Kirsty and Rebecca from Poole, Dorset, paid a special tribute on Gardeners’ World to his beloved dog Nigel, who died in May. The gardening expert thanked the siblings for their touching speech, after they raised a glass to pets who had “flown to heaven”, including his much-loved golden retriever.
Missing like mad
The scene aired as part of Gardeners’ World’s Winter Specials, which allowed viewers to look back at highlights from the past year on the programme.
Included in the show was a speech from Kirsty and Rebecca, who had created a special garden space to accommodate their pets.
Their friend Mandy read out the speech on their behalf, as they unveiled the finishing touches with a champagne toast.
She read: “There’s been so much support from animal lovers, but we are still missing friends on a Friday night.

“So finally we just wanted to say, to Nigel in the sky, say hello to all our dogs that have flown up there on high.
“We will miss you on the TV. The world will miss you too. Monty, you’re a diamond, we send all our love to you. Cheers to Nigel,” they added.
Evidently touched by their kind words, Monty responded that he was impressed by their garden and the special mention to his old furry companion.
He responded from the comfort from his garden: “Thank you for your lovely poem Kirsty and Rebecca.
“I thought your garden looked terrific and I was very moved by your reference to Nigel, who I am of course missing like mad.
“But I have got topiary Nigel and we have got to look after him, as he is getting as shaggy as he was in life,” he added.
It comes as the garden expert paid his own tribute to Nigel after he suddenly died after suffering “violent, unstoppable seizures”.
The dog had made regular appearances on Gardeners’ World and even lent his name to Monty’s book Nigel: My Family and Other Dogs.

The star shared a photo of a terracotta pot with a sentimental engraving on his Instagram page.
It read: “Nigel 2008-2020,” along with a small picture of the dog.
Monty captioned the post: “This arrived today from Whichford in memory of the old boy.
“I shall have to plant it appropriately #tennisballtree.”
The star was left devastated following Nigel’s death as he shared fond memories of his “old friend” via his social media accounts.
He wrote: “‘I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died.
“He filmed every moment of last Friday’s programme and right to the end was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self.
“But he was suddenly taken ill with violet, unstoppable seizures and despite everything that our wonderful vets could do he slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls.
“Rest now old friend. See you in the sweet bye and bye.” (sic)
