Kim Kardashian West, who many refer to as the queen of social media, changed the way she uses platforms such as Instagram and Twitter when she became a mom. Ahead, learn what the parent of four said about becoming more “cautious” with social media after having kids.
Kardashian West and her husband of five years, Kanye West, have four children: six-year-old North West, one-year-old Chicago West, three-year-old Saint West, and Psalm, who is five months old.
The 38-year-old has proven time and time again that it’s possible to have a career based solely on social media — she gets paid thousands, sometimes millions, of dollars — for every sponsored post.
But for someone who has been extremely open about sharing every detail of her life with followers on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, it’s somewhat surprising to learn Kardashian West has changed the way she approaches the platforms.
Kim Kardashian West says she ‘didn’t know what the word ‘privacy’ really meant’
A keynote speaker at the 23rd World Congress on Information Technology convention earlier this week, Kardashian West spoke about figuring out the “balance of sharing,” according to E! News.
“I think at the beginning, I didn’t know what the word ‘privacy’ really meant. I was very okay with people knowing every detail of my life,” the founder of KKW Beauty admitted.
She continued saying, “As you get older and you have kids, and you realize you do want to value some privacy, I figured out a really good balance of sharing what I want to share.”
She went on, saying that sometimes safety can be a concern.
“There definitely is oversharing, especially when safety can be a factor when there’s so many eyes on you. I learned firsthand that if you share too much, it can be a little bit dangerous at times,” Kardashian West said referring to being robbed in Paris, France. Later it was revealed the robbers used her social media to track her movements in real-time. Find out which piece of jewelry she got back after the robbery.
But for someone who has built an empire on sharing every aspect of her life with the public — she’s starred in her family’s reality series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, since it began in 2007 — her life has played out largely on social media which is something her fans have come to expect.
But since having children, Kardashian West has taken a step back and now thoughtfully considers what she posts even more so.
“I move really cautiously now that I have kids, but I still love to be open and honest and that’s who I am… that’s my brand,” she said. “There is a way to have both and to share, but not feel like your whole life is being used just for social media. You do have to have balance.”
She also said she wants to keep her kids’ social media usage in check.
Watch Kardashian West on Keeping Up with the Kardashians at 10 p.m. on E! every Sunday night.
