Yellowstone: Kevin Costner discusses being on show in 2018
Yellowstone fans will likely know Kevin Costner well as John Dutton on the Western series. However, some might be curious to know more about the actor who has already enjoyed a long career in film and television over many decades. Here’s how he started out in the industry and what he looked like in some of his earlier roles.
When did Kevin Costner start acting?
Costner began his career back in 1974 after he had become interested in acting when in college.
Then in 1978, he had just married his college sweetheart Cindy Silva and on their honeymoon, he had a chance encounter with actor Richard Burton.
Seizing his opportunity to speak to a Hollywood star, Costner asked Burton for some advice on the flight they were both on.
Speaking about the moment to Yahoo in 2016, he said: “He had a gentleness with me.

“I was really unsure what I wanted to do with my life, and I saw him there, and I intruded on his.
“I had never been in a play, well, that’s not true I had done some community theatre, but I was really thinking I could make this a living and I desperately wanted to talk to him.
“The conversation never really expanded other than there was a gentleness and a kindness, and looking at me saying, ‘I think you should try this.’”
This set the now 66-year-old on his path to stardom as he began to pursue acting full-time.
Costner’s film debut was in Sizzle Beach USA before he went on to land a role in The Touch in 1983 with Eve Lilith and Andra Millian.
One of his first major films was The Big Chill, which starred actors like Jeff Goldblum and Kevin Kline.
However, his scenes were removed in the final cut of the film.
Although, this wasn’t all a bad thing as the director Lawrence Kasdan promised him a role in another project, which would become his big break.

From then on, Costner had roles in huge films like Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
He also directed and starred in Dances with Wolves in 1990, which won seven Oscars.
Other film fans will know him from including The Postman, Waterworld, Message in a Bottle and Thirteen Days.
In more recent years, viewers will recognise him for roles in Man of Steel, mini-series Hatfields & McCoys, Hidden Figures and Molly’s Game.
The actor will soon be returning for the fourth season of Yellowstone when it launches in June.
However, the fate of his character John has still not been confirmed with some worrying he could be in danger.
Costner has also written a series for ABC called National Parks, which has just been given a pilot order.
He wrote the show alongside Aaron Helbing and author Jon Baird.
The premise of the series follows a group of elite national parks service agents who solve crimes in beautiful locations.
