EastEnders’ Jake Wood has confessed he was lost for words as Dame Barbara Windsor opened up about her Alzheimer’s diagnosis for the first time in 2014.
The Albert Square legend broke the heartbreaking news to her former co-star – who plays Max Branning on the BBC soap – in the early stages of her diagnosis.
Speaking to the Daily Star , he said: "I spoke to Barbara about it quite early on and she was asking: ‘Why did it happen to me?’ And I didn’t have an answer.
"It’s such a dreadful disease with no rhyme and reason to it and it really had an impact on me."
The soap star was close with Barbara during her time playing Peggy Mitchell.
He added: "Barbara is such a special friend to me. She is such a big character and so well loved by all of us and the nation….it’s devastating to see her go through this".
In a display of commitment to the actress, whose condition is sadly getting worse, he is running the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon alongside Natalie Cassidy, Adam Woodyatt and Barbara’s husband Scott.
The group are hoping to raise £100,000 for Dementia Revolution in Barbara’s honour.
The soap star’s comments come amid the news that Sadly Barbara has "deteriorated" in recent months, and tragically struggles to recognise her husband Scott.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Scott emotionally revealed: "Maybe, one day, Barbara won’t know who I am – one day she won’t know who I am. I’ve had it twice.
"I was helping her out of the bath and she suddenly looked at me really scared and said, ‘Sorry, who are you?’
"It is heartbreaking and there’re no words which can describe it."
