Happy Valley’s Rhys Connah dashes hopes for season four as fans call for him to star in a spin-off show
He became the breakout star of Happy Valley after reprising his childhood role.
Yet Rhys Connah has dashed fans’ hopes that he will revive his role as Ryan as he insisted there will be no season four of the beloved BBC show.
Appearing on Monday’s episode of Loose Women, 16-year-old Rhys revealed: ‘Sadly, there are no plans. I’m very sorry everyone.’
The show’s creator Sally Wainwright previously revealed that the programme took a deliberately long pause between series two and three as she wanted to wait for Rhys to grow up and reprise his role as an angsty teenager.
Rhys said of her decision: ‘It’s not very often things like this can happen. I’m realizing how much easier it might have been to have just cast someone else. I’m honoured they waited so I could play the part.’

Amid huge anticipation the final episode aired on Sunday, concluding the three series, nine year cat and mouse game between Sgt Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton)
Yet Rhys revealed he had no clue how the series would conclude because they kept plot details confined to just a few people.
Rhys explained: ‘I read the script and it was redacted. I spoke to James and Sarah, but I didn’t know how it was going to play out at all.
‘They went for a more emotional side, a lot of people weren’t expecting it.’
Fans have since called for another series, while critics gave the episode five star reviews across the board.
Viewers have also suggested a spin off show focused on Rhys working as a policeman after the series finale saw him express an interest in joining the force.
Emmerdale’s Lisa Riley tweeted her thoughts, sharing: ‘LISTEN UP EVERYONE who’s with me??Why why why can we NOT have another series of “HAPPY VALLEY” where lovely RYAN is now a copper in training ?? it would totally make sense-and see where that could go phone Sally Wainright please ⭐️ #happyvalley.’
Others added: ‘What a great ending for Series 3 of @HappyValleyBBC. Got a feeling this isn’t the end though, and we’ll see a Series 4 in a few years time with Ryan being a Police Officer doing Catherine’s job.’;

‘Calling it now, there will be a spin off in a few years following Ryan as a trainee police officer following in his granny’s footsteps!’; ‘#HappyValley was amazing. Looking forward to the spin off series about Ryan being a police officer in a couple of years.’;
‘btw if happy valley do what scott and bailey didn’t and it’s revived in years to come somehow with ryan as a police officer i will cry’; ‘Can we have a spin-off series where Ryan joins the police force in a few years please? #HappyValley.’
The thrilling showdown between Sgt Catherine Cawood and Tommny Lee Royce resulted in the villain setting himself on fire after realising he’d reached the end of the road when he’d come to the conclusion his son Ryan was happier without him.

The intense showdown ended with a sobbing Tommy dousing himself in petrol before stating that her tasering him would set him alight, which she’ll get ‘done’ for.
But in a complete change of character, Tommy said he didn’t want her to get done and instead set himself alight in shocking scenes.
Instead of watching him burn, Catherine covered him in a blanket and put out the flames shortly before the police arrived.
Yet it was later revealed that he had died from his injuries.
