Fans of Billions love the show for its realistic plot lines, and the series’ focus on the world of finance and financial crime often mirror real-life prosecutions and investigations. But in addition to its intriguing story and great acting, the amazing soundtrack for Billions is another solid reason to watch the show.
Brian Koppelman and David Levien are the creators and writers of the show, and in 2019, Koppelman (who’s actually a former A&R executive) told Variety that that they pick songs that will compliment each episode’s mood and theme: “We are thinking in each episode about the musical palette and finding some unity. Either it’s a thematic unity or it’s a tonal unity in the songs. Or we’re trying to do a juxtaposition to show a couple of radically different emotional states.”
Levien also revealed how they strike the balance between big-name musicians and indie picks. “There’s sort of a priority list of what are the most important songs versus how much they cost,” he explained. “And then in some other spots we’re able to use really unknown types of artists that provide the right backdrop sonically and often lyrically, but for a really low price.”
