Vedder’s performed solo on “Porch,” while the Soweto Gospel choir joined him for “Long Road” and “Better Man.” Vedder’s four-song set also featured a cover of John Lennon‘s “Imagine.”
The event took place in FNB Stadium, Johannesburg on December 2 and also featured performances from Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Cassper Nyovest, D’banj, Ed Sheeran, Femi Kuti, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, Sho Madjozi, Tiwa Savage, Usher, and Wizkid among others.
The concert was held to commemorate the great South African leader, freedom fighter, and humanitarian’s 100th year. The charity campaign aimed to raise $1 billion in aid to help the world’s poorest, with 50 percent committed to women and girls.
“Let’s leave this great gathering allowing the music and the message of this centennial celebration to renew our commitment to genuine transformation,” Oprah Winfrey told the crowd at FNB Stadium during her special keynote address. “Let’s insist on a world where every girl, child, is protected, and every little boy feels safe. Let’s pledge ourselves to being true global citizens—and let us at long last become the change we want to see in education, in clean water, in health, in gender equality everywhere.”
