Eamonn Holmes, 60, originally took to Twitter to congratulate his and wife Ruth Langsford’s This Morning replacements Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary yesterday. The TV host also liked and responded to a post that observed how the “business can be so cruel”, after he was dropped by ITV following 14 years hosting the programme’s Friday slot.

Very kind of you

Eamonn was tweeted by journalist and royal expert Kinsey Schofield, who said: “I really enjoy you and your wife.

“This business can be so cruel. I will continue to support you and whatever you decide to do next.

“Congratulations on so many brilliant years executing the job wonderfully.”

To which the 60-year-old responded: “Very kind of u to say Lady K. Appreciate it.”(sic)

The duo present the show’s Friday slot, however, it is now likely they will only be called in during summer holidays when Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield take a break.

It has been alleged that the longstanding TV couple have been replaced as part of an ITV reshuffle.

The decision came after ITV chief Carolyn McCall sent out an email outlining her accelerated diversity and inclusion plan.

Previously Alison has spoken out about the need for more diversity on TV: “I don’t think it’s normal that you see a black person in my industry.

“There needs to be more people of colour. There needs to be more diversity.

“Then TV will represent society as it is,” she added.

An insider revealed to The Mirror that the pair are “pretty furious” over the news but sometimes “tough” decisions are inevitable.

They said: “Eamonn is pretty furious and everyone feels for him and Ruth, they are well-liked on the team, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made.”

Alison and Dermot are said to have impressed ITV bosses when they took over hosting duties over the summer.

Eamonn and Ruth wished the new hosts good luck in an emotional tweet yesterday writing: “It’s a changing of the guard on Fridays from January.

“We hope you make Alison and Dermot as welcome as you’ve made us over the years. Have a Ball you two!

“It’s not Goodbye from us, it’s simply Au Revoir until the next half term.”

The couple each posted the same message on their individual Twitter accounts.

Earlier this year Eamonn responded to a fan after they tweeted that ITV should not “axe” him and Ruth for the sake of “diversity”.

The fan typed: “Executives at @thismorning best not be trying to axe @EamonnHolmes and @RuthieeL to fill their diversity quota. They’re brilliant hosts and nothing about the show needs changing! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! @ITV#ThisMorning#ITV.”
