Debbie McGee has revealed she’s been secretly battling breast cancer and has undergone surgery to remove two tumours.
The 60-year-old widow has told how doctors discovered cancerous tissue in her left breast during a routine screening.
In an interview with the Sun , Debbie said she believes the cancer was triggered by the stress of losing her beloved husband Paul two years ago.
Debbie said: "I’ve never been through the stress I’ve been through since I lost Paul.
“Grief hits you in so many ways you’re not expecting. It’s not all about sadness."
The former Strictly star also told how she felt ‘lost’ going through treatment without Paul by her side.
But Debbie, who has no history of breast cancer in her family, said she was counting herself the ‘luckiest person in the world’ after being given the all clear.
After being diagnosed in October, Debbie had surgery on Thursday 17 January and had her dressings removed last Wednesday.
Speaking after treatment, Debbie said: "They were talking about full mastectomy, taking flesh from my thighs. That was really scary given my dancing — and I was all on my own."
But Debbie made the decision to have a smaller operation to remove the cancerous areas instead.
"You think all the worst things. Are you going to be scarred being a woman? Am I going to be deformed and have a lumpy bosom:" said Debbie.
“I thought, ‘This is a moment when Paul isn’t here with me’. It was much tougher to take.
“You’re very vulnerable in lots of ways that you weren’t before" she said.
Debbie praised her close family and neighbours for supporting her through her ordeal.
She is now following doctors’ advice to rest-up for six weeks while her wounds heal.
Debbie revealed she was sharing her story to encourage other women to protect themselves by going for regular mammogram appointments and smear tests.
