Childish Gambino said during his headlining performance on the first day of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday that he wanted to give fans “an experience” rather than just a “concert.”
The Grammy winner subsequently busted out hits like “Feels Like Summer” and “This Is America” and debuted some new material.
During the show, Gambino reflected on the recent deaths of rappers Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle as well as the December passing of his father.
“All we really have are memories at the end of the day,” Gambino said. “Some of y’all won’t make it to next week. While we’re here, feel something and pass it on.”
Prior to his performance on stage, Gambino, a.k.a. Donald Glover, premiered his new film, Guava Island, which he recently described as one his favorite projects that he has ever worked on.
The film, starring Glover, Rihanna, “Game of Thrones'” Nonso Anozie, and Black Panther‘s Letitia Wright, launched on Amazon Prime Video on Saturday.
