A New Season of 'Grantchester' Premieres on PBS July 14. Here's What to Expect.

Why are there so many murders in the quaint English village of Grantchester? Viewers may never get a satisfactory answer to that question, but that won’t stop them from tuning in on Sunday nights this summer when Grantchester returns to PBS. Season 4 of the charming British mystery drama arrives on June 14 with a 2-hour season premiere, and with it comes some big changes.

Saying goodbye to James Norton as Sidney Chambers

As most Grantchester fans have likely heard by now, Season 4 will be the last for James Norton, who has played crime-solving vicar Sidney Chambers since the series premiered in 2014.

Norton has decided to hang up his collar and pursue other projects. His last episode will air during Season 4. It’s a bittersweet farewell for fans, but he’s promised that his last episode will be one to remember.

“The final scene is very sad,” the actor told Radio Times. “It’s been a real joy to play Sidney. I’ve loved every minute of Grantchester and owe a lot to the show.”

Tom Britteny is taking over for Norton

Norton might be on his way out, but that doesn’t mean the end of Grantchester. In the season premiere, viewers will meet William Davenport (Tom Britteny) who will take over duties at the Grantchester vicarage — and presumably join detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) in solving some of the village’s all-too-frequent murders.

However, it might take a while for Davenport and Keating to get used to each other. The 1950s are drawing to a close, and the new vicar, with his leather jacket and motorcycle, could be more change than the quiet village and its conservative detective can handle.

The new vicar also has some secrets that will undoubtedly be revealed over the course of the series.

“What drives him is that he wants to be a good person and wants to help people by being a wonderful vicar that people love and trust,” Britteny told Radio Times. “There’s a dark past underneath that makes him that way. William has flaws and things he’s running away from.”

There will be a Season 5 of ‘Grantchester’

Grantchester’s five-episode fourth season is likely to be too short for fans. Fortunately, they’ll have more episodes to look forward to. PBS and ITV have renewed the show for a fifth season, with Green and Britteny set to return. Kudos will produce the show.

Season 5 will pick up in 1957, a year after the fourth season ends. Production will begin in Cambridgeshire, U.K., this summer.

““We are very excited that Grantchester is returning for a fifth series,” said Emma Kingsman-Lloyd, executive producer for Kudos, in a statement. “The audience has taken the pairing of Robson Green and Tom Brittney to their hearts and we are delighted to be able to continue the story of Geordie and Will with Masterpiece and ITV.”
