Prince Harry May Have Hinted at Royal Baby Name Last Year

Prince Harry may have hinted at his son’s name last year. He and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced their son’s name — Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor — on May 8, 2019, two days after Markle gave birth to him at Portland Hospital (which the couple confirmed today when they filed Archie’s birth certificate).

But we may have known what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, would name their royal baby, as early as Oct. 2018. Keep reading to get the details on the name that stood out to the Duke of Sussex during a visit on their fall 2018 royal tour.

Prince Harry commented on boy’s name in New Zealand

During their 16-day royal tour last fall, Prince Harry met a boy and commented on his name. The boy’s name? Archie.

Here’s how it happened. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met crowds in Auckland, New Zealand, shortly after they had announced they were expecting their first child together.

The boy, Archie Somerville-Ryan, along with family, gave Prince Harry a book called, Little Gems, the boy told a local news station. That’s when the Duke of Sussex asked the boy and his siblings their names.

Prince Harry on boy’s name: ‘Archie, I like that name’

“Harry asked all of me and my sisters, ‘what’s your name?’ And then we answered back, ’Scarly, Beth, and Archie.’ Then he said: ‘Archie, I like that name,’” Somerville-Ryan recalled.

After Somerville-Ryan and his siblings introduced themselves to Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex called over his wife to meet them.

“He said, ‘Come on Meghan, look at these guys.’ Because we had roses in the garden,” Sommerville-Ryan said. “And he introduced our names and things to Meghan, and kind of like nodded when they said our names.”

Boy’s mom remarked about royal baby being named Archie

Somerville-Ryan explained that when the conversation ended, his mother, Emily Somerville-Ryan, wondered if they’d name their royal baby Archie because of Prince Harry’s interest in the name.

“And then when it all ended, my mum said, ‘imagine if they call it Archie,’” he said.

His mother also spoke with a local news station. “My friend Bridget said, ‘Oh my goodness he was so into Archie — he’s definitely going to call the baby Archie,’ and I thought, ‘What?’” she recalled.

Theories about the origin of Archie’s name

So, where did the royal baby’s name come from? The truth is, we won’t know until Prince Harry and Markle let us in on their thought process. But we can make educated guesses.

One potential origin of the name comes from a cat Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, rescued, named Archie.

A friend of Markle’s told news outlets that the future duchess was very fond of the cat and often talked about it with friends. So, there’s a chance the newest member of the British royal family got his name from a beloved pet.

Here’s another theory about baby Archie’s name. Another potential meaning behind the name comes from the Archie comic books Markle used to collect with her father, Thomas Markle.

No matter where Prince Harry and Markle got the name for their newborn son, there’s no denying how adorable baby Archie is.
