Prison Nurse Charged With Murder For Poisoning Husband Amid Affair With Inmate

A Missouri prison nurse has been charged with murder after allegedly poisoning her husband to marry an inmate.

Amy Murray, 40, has been accused of poisoning her husband with antifreeze before setting their house on fire to cover up his murder on December 11, 2018.

The Miller County Sheriff’s Office said in a probable cause statement that Murray used an accelerant to start the flames. After leaving her husband’s dead body on their bed, she ran out of the house with her child and dogs, and waited at a nearby McDonalds. When she returned, the house was entirely engulfed in flames, at which point she called 911. Fire marshals, however, quickly determined the fire was intentionally set.

According to the statement obtained by PEOPLE, an autopsy showed the woman’s husband, Joshua Murray, 37, was dead before the fire began.

Police were already suspicious of Murray’s story, as they found it odd that she did not go inside the house to try and save her partner.

Following the chaos, detectives began investigating Murray. The woman, who worked as a nurse at the Jefferson City Correctional Center in Jefferson City, Missouri, was known to be romantically involved with inmate Eugene Claypool, 40.

“During the phone calls, Amy Murray talks about not wanting to be around her husband, Joshua Murray, and was wanting a divorce from him,” the police statement reads.

After allegedly committing murder, Murray even rushed back to her prison lover to tell him they could now get married, because her husband was dead.

Police said Claypool has been behind bars since 2002, two years after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and robbery, and was given a life sentence. He will be eligible for parole in 2027, after serving 25 years of his sentence.

Murray has been released after posting $750,000 bond following her arrest last week. She has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree arson, tampering with physical evidence and armed criminal action, according to Miller County jail records. It’s unknown if she has entered a plea.

Amy Murray is scheduled to appear in court this Wednesday.
