Freddie Starr 's wife has revealed she left him after he told her he'd headbutted her son in a violent temper.

Sophie Lea, 38, has told the Mirror she ended her marriage to "protect" her boy after the comedian spiralled out of control.

Sophie Lea split from the comic in 2013 but they were still married when he died alone in Spain aged 76 last week.

He moved abroad after the marriage failed, and Sophie, 38, has now revealed Starr tormented her and drove her to the brink of suicide.

She says she put up with the abuse for a long time, but she decided enough was enough when he turned on her young son Elliott.

Sophie explained that she found out about the incident when Starr phone to tell her about the row, and that was when she decided to leave him.

She told the Mirror: "I didn’t realise I had a line, but that was it, the line had been crossed. We didn’t split up because we didn’t love one another, we split up because I had to protect my son.

"It was an impossible situation and impossible decision, but when that happened, it was over.

"That call Freddie made to me was the last time we ever spoke. I hung up on him and rang the police.”

Weeks later Sophie was stunned to read in the Mirror that Starr had put his Warwickshire mansion on the market and moved to Spain.

She added: “He put all my belongings in a skip outside the house, he threw everything out.

“Freddie literally deleted me and Elliott from his life.”

Sophie met Starr in 2010 while she was working as a singer on his live stage tour, and she later got together with the comedian after her previous marriage broke down.

They married in 2013 and split in 2015 but they never went through divorce proceedings despite being separated for four years.

Sophie has said her husband totally ignored all her pleas for her a divorce and she couldn't move forward.

The funnyman was married five times, including twice to the same woman, Donna, the mother of his daughter Ebony.
